That is a special kind of material used for the most protection in a fencing protective gear. It protects against a max. 8 joul (Newton meter) force of a broken blade, in other words it can withstand a force equivalent of 800 Newton. Some material used for fencing uniforms in not rated at all. The other common rating in fencing is 350 Newton. An 800 N material is more than twice as strong as the 350 N material. This plays an unvaluable role in case a weapon brakes. Special testing proved that the material tested can withstand the previously mentioned force. Measurements made by an independent lab in Europe. An average of several tests in being used. Also, the material is subjected to washing to mimic normal use. The more an 800 N rated material is being washed and the stronger the detergent is, the faster the resistance will deteriorate. This applies to jackets, knickers and underarm protectors.
